TID101662 (ISPXE005) - Changing Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size on Windows 95

From Developer Community

Changing Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size will change the packet size for SPX to communicate on.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

IntranetWare Client v2.2 for Windows 95 SPX stack automatically fragmentize large data packet to the size of the physical media. For example, the stack will automatically fragmentize packets to the packet size of 1513 on an ethernet network. Some old SPX stack which adhered to the old SPX specification does not handle this size of packet or any packet size larger than 594. To communicate to the old SPX stack, you need to manually set the Link Support Layer Buffer Size to 576 if using 802.3 frame type or 573 if using 802.2 frame type. This option can be found under control panel, click on Network, select Novell IntranetWare Client under Configuration tab, select Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size under Advanced Settings tab.

Unfortunately, the range for Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size is 638 - 24682. This means, you still cannot tell the stack to fragmentize the packet to the size of 594. To get around this problem, use registry to change the Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size value.

The location of the registry is as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINENetworkNovellSystem ConfigLink SupportMax Buffer Size, double click on "Name: 0" and change the value to either 576 or 573 depends on the frame type you used. You may not see Max Buffer Size entry on your Windows 95 workstation, if this is the case, you need to update the registry first by changing the value of the Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size in the control panel to a larger value, e.g. 5000. Then, reboot Windows 95 and you will see the Max Buffer Size. Reboot Windows 95 again after changing the registry.

Note that this only works if the Windows 95 machine used NDIS driver. If you have ODI driver, you need to change the ODI driver to NDIS driver first before making the changes to Link Support Layer Max Buffer Size. Otherwise, you will get "Windows protection error" after rebooting Windows.
