ABSTRACT:
When installing the SDK (in this case Release 7) from Microsoft Windows 3.1, the installation failed on the file NWSDKTOOLS$RUN.OVL.
The problem occured because older versions of MSCDEX.EXE did not support the $ character in a file name.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
PROBLEM
When installing the SDK (in this case Release 7) from Microsoft Windows 3.1, the installation failed on the file NWSDKTOOLS$RUN.OVL. The developer could see the file from the File Manager but couldn't copy it to the hard drive. From a DOS box, when performing a DIR $RUN.OVL, the file name was visible but it couldn't be copied. The developer was running MSDOS 6.22
REASON
When a CD ROM was added to the machine, the installation software for the hardware installed an old copy of the MSCDEX driver and did not use the copy supplied with MSDOS 6.22. Older versions of MSCDEX did not support the $ character in a file name.
SOLUTION
USE a current version of MSCDEX.EXE. For Windows 3.1 users, the statement which executes MSCDEX.EXE is normally found in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
