Opensuse-style/The Maintainer

From Developer Community

< Back to openSUSE Style Home

SUSE is providing an experienced maintainer for this project. Rjwalter is the English Language Consultant here at SUSE and has been involved in our releases for several years. However, we really want your input in what the style for SUSE should be and your help making openSUSE consistent.

Maintainer Responsibilities

  • Providing input in discussions relating to the style
  • Helping to determine the pros and cons of any considered decisions and considering the consequences
  • Taking internally-produced documentation and programs into consideration when making final decisions so we can use common sources for openSUSE and professional products
  • Assisting SUSE's writers and developers in understanding and following the style guide
  • Updating the files to reflect new decisions
  • Providing new HTML and PDF files when significant changes are made

Working Decisions

From time to time, the maintainer may need to make temporary decisions for consistency in a project when the schedule is unlikely to allow proper research and discussion. These decisions will be made as a best-guess based on whatever research the schedule permits. These decisions, called "working decisions", are not considered final and will be opened for discussion as soon as possible. As soon as time permits, the maintainer will make a final decision based on thorough research and discussion with the community on the mailing list. When the decision can be implemented depends on the state of any current projects: implementation may need to wait until a release cycle has ended.

The intention of these "working decisions" is to allow work to continue on an at least somewhat consistent basis when dealing with tight development and translation cycles. They are especially important for program texts, when editors may run into new or inconsistent terminology with only a few hours before texts must be sent to translation.
