The Open Socket specification is intended to bring a uniformed communications API set to all OS platforms. (i.e. Windows, NetWare, Linux, Unix, etc.)
For Linux and Unix type platforms it will add functionality such as overlapped I/O, namespace independent naming and protocol independence which are currently enjoyed by Windows and NetWare through the WinSock 2.2 specification.
For NetWare and Windows developers, it will provide a common transport API so programs written for Windows and NetWare can also use the same transport code on Linux or Unix projects.
Some of the goals of the project are to be backward compatible with BDS sockets and WinSock. However, the scope of the project is not limited to just providing the functionality in BSD Sockets and WinSock 2.2. The broader intent is to provide a standard specification that can grow to meet ever changing communications and technologies needs.
