Preface

There are two methods of installing Xubuntu, either install Ubuntu server and then apt-get the Xubuntu desktop or follow through the complete Xubuntu CD install as described here.

Acquire Xubuntu CDs

Download via http or bittorrent from download.

Pop the CD into your computer and start.

Choose Installation Method

Text mode install mode is available for servers without great graphics or if you have a problem in graphic mode, or have less than 192MB memory. Please read the HOWTO: Install Ubuntu for the text mode install.

Graphics mode will actually start a live CD environment, once this has loaded simply start the installer by using the icon on the desktop.

Choose Language

This is the language for the installation as opposed to the default language of the GUI once installed.

Choose Location

Languages have regional variations, this menu will allow you to select the specific locale for text and for the time zone.

Select Keyboard Layout

Some regions have different keyboards, the installer allows you to test and select your specific keyboard.

Configure User Details

You are asked for your user details and hostname.

Who are you? This will create a user account based on your user details

Partition Disks

In order to convert to diskless later we need to install Kubuntu on one large partition using the entire disk. The disks detected will depend on your hardware configuration.
