Either download, pick up a linux magazine with a Ubuntu CD, or have one sent to you free!
Pop the CD into your computer and start.
Text mode install mode is available for servers without great graphics or if you have a problem in graphic mode, or have less than 192MB memory.
Graphics mode will actually start a live CD environment, once this has loaded simply start the installer by using the icon on the desktop.
This is the language for the installation as opposed to the default language of the GUI once installed. Note for non-English languages if your graphics hardware does not support your character set, e.g. choosing Korean installation with an US graphics card you might not be able to see any text.
Languages have regional variations, this menu will allow you to select the specific locale for text and for the time zone.
Some regions have different keyboards, the installer allows you to test and select your specific keyboard.
For graphics mode you are asked for your user details and hostname. In text mode you are asked configure the hostname for your LTSP server, the default "ubuntu" is fine but might be confusing if you are installing multiple servers. The user details are asked later.
If you do not have a DHCP server you will be asked for the following information
In order to convert to diskless later we need to install Ubuntu on one large partition using the entire disk. The disks detected will depend on your hardware configuration.
|
Changed Partitions If you change an existing partition structure you will see a message telling you to reboot, you have to reboot in order for the partition change to occur and then repeat all the previous install steps. If you do not then latter steps might fail to create a file system on the new configuration. |
The installer will now format and partition the disks.
Set the clock to UTC.
Configure a test account, we will migrate user information to LDAP in Active Directory later.
The installer will now install the base system. If you are installing from a CD-ROM repository expect to see long delays whilst scanning the repository with the progress bar at 40% and 80%.
An LTSP server should not be used as a terminal when clients are connected, mainly due to the burden of the xserver and the system being interrupted at the hardware level to respond to the users actions. An xserver is still needed in order to run GDM the login manager, to service client X11 connections and for occasional administration tasks. An easy option is to pick the lowest usable resolution which is 640x480.
The installer will continue to install and configure system packages and finally finish.
