The Dharma Repository is a proprietary repository of XML content that provides an organization the ability to accurately determine the specific current state of a node(s) with respect to security-relevant aspects. Some of the security-relevant aspects have been identified as possible use-cases for this XML content and are listed below:
* security advisory distribution * vulnerability assessment * patch management * configuration management * auditing * system inventory
The XML content, divided into two categories: inventory and vulnerability, is based solely on the international information security standard — the Open Vulnerability Assessment Language. This project, the Open Vulnerability Assessment Language(OVAL), is developed by the Mitre Corporation and is publicly supported by many of today’s leading information security organizations; while still remaining under the watchful stewardship of the Mitre Corporation to ensure the utmost quality of product.
As well, the Open Vulnerability Assessment Language project is sponsored by US-CERT of the Department of Homeland Security.
