Microsoft Announces Support for Linux as Silverlight 1.0 Ships

As the development of Rich Internet Applications (RIA) gains more and more momentum, Microsoft announced on September 5th its initial release of Silverlight, their cross-platform and cross-browser interface for building RIAs. Along with this announcement Microsoft also announced a partnership with Novell to deliver a Silverlight equivalent for all Linux distributions, Moonlight. The following is from Microsoft's Silverlight web site, http://silverlight.net/ :

Microsoft is committed to making Silverlight a Web client that runs on all major browsers, and the commitment extends to Linux.
Microsoft and Novell have announced they are working together on Moonlight, a Silverlight implementation for Linux.

More on Silverlight can be found at the above link and more Moonlight information at the Mono Project ( http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight ) and Miguel de Icaza's Blog at http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2007/Sep-05.html . If you have RIAs in your future or just want to see what can be done using these technologies, jump in now, get involved and be ahead of the curve as more and more applications are delivered to the desktop in this way.

Updated Developer Tools Page on Novell Developer Community Web Site

As part of our efforts in building out the Novell Developer Community, you'll find we have made significant updates to the Developer Tools page ( http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Developer_Tools ). While in no way complete, these updates have established a foundation to build upon. As we are able to work with more and more third party tools vendors, this page will provide developers with many options for filling out their toolbox with tools known to support their efforts using Novell products and technologies. As we have more opportunity to evaluate the tools listed we will also be highlighting those that we feel will provide the most power and be the most useful. While we will continue to add and revise the tools listed on the page, the real value to all of us will come from input from you, the Developer Community. We would like your feedback, suggestions, etc via the Tools page discussion link found at the bottom of the Developer Tools page. We look forward to hearing from you.

Novell ZENworks Orchestrator, Orchestrate your Data Center

Automating the data center for maximum resource utilization and flexibility has always been the goal for forward-thinking IT administrators. But as centralized mainframe environments have been replaced by heterogeneous hardware, operating systems, storage and other resources, the vision of a tidy, efficient, automated data center has dimmed.

With techniques such as virtualized computing, shared storage and distributed resource management, administrators can simplify administration, maximize utilization, and assign resources dynamically to meet shifting workloads. But the means to commoditize these technologies and tie them together in an automated management framework was lacking—until now. Now a single automated solution can manage virtual machines, identities, storage and systems in an coordinated and intelligent way according to workload requirements, hardware health and business policies. New innovations in virtualization, systems management standards and Novell technology are converging to make the vision a reality. We call the result Orchestration.

As part of Novell ZENworks Orchestrator (ZOS) developers will be able to create and run custom ZOS jobs further extending the power of ZOS and providing much more control of resource and policy management and provisioning. For more on ZOS visit http://www.novell.com/products/zenworks/orchestrator/ and for the documentation for ZOS go to http://www.novell.com/documentation/zen_orchestrator11/index.html . You'll find the developer doc listed here along with all the ZOS documentation.

Cool Developer Blogs

Last month we announced the new Developer Blogs we were beginning at the Cool Blogs site ( http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/ ). It didn't take long before we began to see the kind of feedback we had wanted these blogs to generate. Our main purpose for creating these blogs is to hear from the Developer Community on topics that will and do affect you. This feedback is being monitored by our management to help us drive the direction of developer offering from Novell. The two blogs that got things rolling are at http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/?p=994 and http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/?p=991 .

Moving forward you'll see more blogs that will touch on some of the hot topics of the Developer Community. We hope you will all take the time to visit the Cool Blogs developer topic at http://www.novell.com/coolblogs/?cat=35 , check out these blogs and provide us with your thoughts on the topics being discussed. One comment from a customer carries more weight than a dozen from one of us, so help us get the word out about the importance of providing developers with what they need to succeed and what matters to them.
