Argentix is a free operating system for the SPARC® and x86 architecture. It is based on OpenSolaris™ Argentix is intended as an end user or desktop operating system. Argentix is licenced under the Common Development and Distribution licence (CDDL)
OpenSolaris™ today is not completely free. Although you can download OpenSolaris™ at no cost, updating the system requires subscription from Sun Microsystems. The "enterprise" system also costs money. Finally, additional software for OpenSolaris™ costs money. With Argentix everything will be free.
OpenSolaris™ today works best as a server operating system. Few software packages are shipped with OpenSolaris™ and there is no mechanism for downloading and installing packages. There are also few drivers for popular hardware, so the user would have to install additional drivers before being able to use the system. With Argentix the user would have more drivers available.
OpenSolaris™ today is quite stable, but works best on SPARC®. Argentix will have equal support on x86 and SPARC® machines.
Argentix will only use free and open source packages. What we can't get from other places, we will write ourselves. Argentix will not contain GNU utilities because GNU software on top of the OpenSolaris™ kernel is very unstable. Open source and free OpenSolaris™ software will also be used. Everything will be available for public use.
Argentix will ship with a lot of applications and drivers. We have also decided to implement some ideas from Linux® like a utility to configure the kernel. Argentix will also include a package manager for easy software installation.
Argentix will be developed on both x86 and SPARC®. Both versions will be developed simultaeously so the user would not need a SPARC® machine to run Argentix.
We are just starting developing Argentix and we already have replacements for some commands. We are soon starting on modifying the OpenSolaris™ kernel. Here you can find out what who is doing what and this is the current Argentix team:
