Novell exteNd
With the Novell exteNd product suite; Novell becomes a competitive player in the Web Services software market. Novell exteNd is a suite of products that are targeted at Web Service development. Each product within the suite merits a complete course in order to detail all of the features and capabilities of the product. Since we don't have time to do that in this course, we'll leave that to further courses that will specialize in using one specific product. For now, we'll offer in introduction to the exteNd product suite so you can be familiar with what each product within exteNd can do.
Novell exteNd consists of the following products:
- exteNd Workbench
- jBroker Web
- exteNd Composer
- exteNd Director
- exteNd Application Server
In addition to the Novell exteNd suite, Novell has developed a UDDI server built upon eDirectory which gives Novell a complete Web Services development environment.
exteNd Workbench
Workbench is a compiler, but it is also more than just a compiler. It is an environment to develop all your J2EE v1.3 applications and modules and integrate them with your Web Services. Workbench contains wizards to help you build Java components as well as web services. Workbench also contains SOAP and WSDL integration for projects. It includes visual editors for WSDL documents and UDDI registries.
exteNd jBroker
jBroker is an engine for building applications that communicate via SOAP. It gives the capability to build a Web Service or client application from a WSDL document. jBroker automatically generates method stubs to allow more time developing business logic.
exteNd Composer
Composer is the integration application. It allows you to integrate your legacy applications as Web Services and business process modeling. Composer includes capabilities to integrate many devices in a visual design environment such as mainframe AS/400's, VAX/VMS, SAP, PeopleSoft, UNIX applications, SQL databases, and others without re-writing application code. Integration is XML based and supports standards for XML and XML related technologies like XForms, XPath, XSL, XSD, DTD as well as J2EE, HTTP, SSL, and X.509 certificates.
exteNd Director
exteNd Director is a Content Management system and portal server. It includes the ability for developers to create dynamic web pages that require personalization, content management, user profiling, workflow, business rules, searching, and security. Director includes support for J2EE applications as well as JSP tag libraries and struts, and Microsoft .NET applications. It also offers support for multiple devices.
exteNd Application Server
exteNd Application Server is a J2EE 1.3 certified application server. It includes advanced features such as clustering support, database connection pooling, session-level failover support, and web server integration with MS IIS, Apache, and Netscape server. The application server also has a browser enabled Administration Console.
