Introduction to DirXML

Welcome to the Introduction to DirXML course. This is designed to be an introduction to Novell's connector technology DirXML. This is one of a series of DeveloperNet University courses which will help you learn Novell Directory Services (NDS) programming. After completing this course, if you are interested in diving in deeper check out the Custom DirXML Driver Development course at http://developer.novell.com/education/tutorials/dirxml2/01.htm.

Course Description This course will introduce you to Novell's DirXML technology by covering both general and specific DirXML topics. Labs are included to allow you to verify what you have learned.
Course Objective At the end of this course, you will have a solid understanding of Novell's DirXML Technology.
Estimated Time to Take this Course To completely work through every module in the course takes about 8 - 10 hours of sustained effort.

Required Items See "Required Setup."
Optional Items None
Required Setup To view this course:
    • A workstations with an Internet Browser

To complete the course labs:
    • Two Windows NT 4.0 SP6 or 2000 computers with eDirectory 8.5 installed.

    • Novell Client32 on both machines

External Data Conversion This section describes how data is converted from an application to eDirectory and back.
Driver Design Considerations This section discusses things you should consider before designing and writing a DirXML driver.
Driver Overview This section describes the major components of a DirXML driver and how they work together.
DirXML Interface Describes the main interfaces provided by the DirXML technology. Including DriverShim, SubscriberShim, and PublisherShim.
Hardware and Software Requirements Describes the Hardware and Software required to run DirXML.
DirXML Installation and Demonstration This section runs through the process of installing a DirXML driver.
DirXML Lab1 This Lab will take you through the process of installing a test DirXML driver.
DirXML Lab 2 This lab will take you through the process of installing a PBX simulator driver. (If you take the Custom DirXML Driver Development course after this one, you will do further work with the PBX simulator driver.)
